Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetes Mellitus is an epidemic of the 21st century.  It can present in many forms including Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. In all cases diabetes can have a serious negative impact on the body and in particularly the feet.

If uncontrolled, diabetes can lead to:

  1. Decreased blood flow to the feet and toes (peripheral vascular disease)
  2. Decreased sensation in the feet and toes (peripheral neuropathy).
  3. In addition to other damaging changes to the rest of the body.

*It is common for a diabetic patient to have other risk factors that can also lead to decreased blood flow to the feet and toes e.g. Heart failure, history of heart attacks or strokes, atrial fibrillation and smoking.

If present, peripheral vascular disease and peripheral neuropathy are a concern as they can lead to diabetic foot ulcers, gangrene, long lasting infections and amputations.

Our Podiatrists role:

  1. By regularly assessing your feet each visit, our podiatrists will identify and act on any potential risk factors that can ultimately cause your feet and health harm.
  2. Our podiatrists will annually explain to you, how to look after your feet at home, useful tips and provide you with take home information.
  3. Thickened skin and corns build up can ultimately lead to skin breakdown, our podiatrists will expertly remove any thickened skin on the feet.
  4. Routine nail care is important as most people tend to cut or wound themselves in the process, by providing routine nail care, we can decrease the risk of wounds and infections.

What you can do:
